When JoAnne Carner started shaping her golf game back in the 1950s, Inglewood Golf Club and the old Juanita Golf Course were her stomping grounds.

Carner, now 73, didn’t possess a bag of golf clubs at first, but a pair of deft hands used for ball hunting at Juanita with her brother, Bill Gunderson.

“We would clean them up and sell them on the weekend,” she said with a laugh about 90 minutes before teeing off last Sunday at the LPGA Legends Swing for the Cure Golf Tournament at Inglewood in Kenmore.

Christopher Penna has been kicking and punching for nearly nine years.

At age 4, the Bothell resident began taking karate lessons for fun, but over time he became serious about his craft. He added to his total of 101 medals by earning two golds and one bronze at the recent national championships and United States team trials at the Broward County Convention and Trade Center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Locals are on the ballot for primary election

For six Bothell residents and one Kenmore resident, the start is now for either being elected or re-elected into office.

Primary election ballots were mailed out earlier this week and the vote tallying will begin on Aug. 7. July 30 is the deadline for in-person voter registration at the county elections office for people not already registered in Washington state.

Looking back on my childhood, I always had what I needed on the first day of school and every day throughout the year.

Not having a backpack full of school supplies was never an issue for me.

There were times when I noticed some of my classmates that didn’t always have everything that I did in the classroom.

I would share a pencil here and a piece of paper there, but never really thought much about it.

Bothell City Council didn’t take action at last night’s meeting regarding raising business-license fees.

According to Deputy City Manager Steve Anderson, Mayor Mark Lamb told council that over the last few weeks he met with several business owners who suggested a more “public process” take place before fees are raised. Anderson added that Lamb agreed with that viewpoint, and business owners may be involved in a public session at council’s next meeting on July 10.

When the calendar reads May 17, Kim Nesselquist and his family head down to Ballard to celebrate Norwegian Constitution Day.

This year’s event was more important than ever for the Kenmore resident, who has lived in the area since 1990. At Leif Erikson Sons of Norway Hall in Ballard, Seattle’s Norwegian Consul Nesselquist was named knight, first class to the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit.

Johnny Hekker tweeted the following news on April 28: “Your boy is going to be a St. Louis Ram! Free agency deal.”

The former Bothell High player, at 6-foot-5, 221 pounds these days, was a standout four-year starting punter at Oregon State University. During his senior season, he punted 50 times for a 44.0 yard average.

The tragic, fatal shootings that took place at a quaint coffee shop and parking lot in Seattle on May 30 can happen anywhere — big cities and smaller ones — says Kenmore Police Chief Cliff Sether.

Recently, Kenmore officers arrested a man who became angry and unveiled a handgun when he confronted the driver who allegedly cut him off in the Safeway parking lot.
