The Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust and locally-based insurer, PEMCO Insurance, invite Northwest residents and families to join a native tree- and shrub-planting event on Nov. 3 at the wetlands on the University of Washington Bothell campus.

The event is to help plant more than 200 native trees and shrubs in the Mountains to Sound Greenway, the 1.5 million-acre landscape that stretches from Seattle to Central Washington and surrounds I-90 and will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“This was a fun way for us to learn more about our Northwest neighbors and help support a truly Northwest cause,” said Jon Osterberg, PEMCO spokesperson.  “We look forward to rolling up our sleeves to help the Greenway, and we’d love to have anyone interested come help us plant trees.”

The Greenway Trust works with thousands of volunteers each year to restore natural spaces. Volunteers will have fun getting dirty, learning about native plants and exploring new areas. PEMCO’s distinctive WALLY van will be on site with drinks, snacks and giveaways to help energize volunteers.

The 58-acre UW Bothell wetlands include North Creek, which is a salmon-bearing stream. The UW began restoring these wetlands in 1998 and has continuously maintained them through the removal of invasive plants and by planting native trees to improve habitat for salmon. Volunteers will plant several species of native foliage to also increase the biodiversity of the area. This event is part of the Greenway’s overall goal to plant over 20,000 native trees and shrubs this season in several natural areas in the Greenway.
