Tansey Lystad finished the race, but she’s got a horseshoe-shaped spike gash and a spike puncture to her left ankle to show for it.
At Saturday’s Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Inglemoor High’s 4A state cross-country champion was involved in a collision with 20 of the top-50 girls who pushed out to the front of the pack on the first corner about 100 meters into the 3.1-mile race.
While medics did their best to clean the mud from the wound, Lystad laughed and said she’d had “so much fun” and was so glad to be there, according to her family. She finished 83rd.
After flying home, Lystad had X-rays taken at a Seattle-area emergency clinic and doctors found no serious damage to her ankle and no stitches were needed. They put her in an aircast for the time being until the swelling goes down.
