High-school coaches rarely have a problem putting their athletes through conditioning drills. Where they can struggle is making sure their athletes have the fuel to complete those drills and eventually perform at peak level during a game. So many games are won in the fourth quarter, not because one team is vastly superior, but because the other ran out of gas.
Many coaches are looking for nutrition guidance. To help them, the Washington Interscholastic Nutrition Forum (WINForum) created the Sports Nutrition Game Plan. At the upcoming clinic from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 5 at the University of Washington, Bothell, speakers will focus on two of the topics covered in the 13-page plan — losing fat and gaining muscle. Both have an impact on the athlete’s performance and overall health.
At the clinic in the Northcreek Events Center, titled “Weighing in on Sport Nutrition: Strategies for Helping Athletes Build High Performance Bodies,” coaches will get their first look at the plan.
The clinic will feature two speakers, Emily Edison, sport dietitian and Western Washington WINForum coordinator, along with Dr. John O’Kane, UW head team physician and associate professor of orthopedics and sports medicine.
The presentation is targeted to high-school coaches, trainers, athletes and their parents, but is open to the general public. To register, visit or call (206) 682-3699.
