On Sunday, Oct. 17 in Bothell, Gladys Mills Pennington celebrated her 107th trip around the sun.
Gladys was born in Deerpark just North of Spokane in 1914. She was one of four children born to Sarah Anne Jones Mills, an immigrant from Wales, and Jonathan Mills, an immigrant from England.
At the age of five, Gladys and her siblings were taken to an orphanage in Spokane. It is unknown what happened to their parents.
According to her daughter, Gladys lived at the orphanage until she graduated from high school in 1932. She earned a scholarship to Kinman Business University in Spokane before attending Eastern Washington University in Cheney.
Eventually, she left for Baltimore, Maryland and applied for a government job at one of the first social security offices there.
Gladys has one daughter and six grandchildren. She currently lives at Cogir Memory Care in Bothell.
She loves dogs and her morning exercise.
