Kenmore police responded to an assault incident on July 10 and subsequently connected the suspect to a non-injury drive-by shooting at the Kingsgate Safeway from three days prior.

Police arrested Benjamin Akira Henderson, 28, on the 17500 block of 80th Ave. NE in Kenmore, and charged him with unlawful possession of a firearm, drive-by shooting and felony harassment.

Henderson confronted two patrons in the Safeway parking lot around 9:45 p.m. on July 7, after exchanging words with them inside, according to police reports. Henderson then challenged the two patrons to a fight, showing off a handgun in his waistband.

Henderson then entered a vehicle, driven by another person, before firing two to three rounds into the air as they left the lot, according to witness reports.

Henderson was previously convicted for felony harassment in 2009 and has a pending possession, manufacturing and selling of dangerous weapons charge in King County, court documents say. In total, he has had four warrants issued since 2009.

According to court documents, Kenmore police arrested Henderson around 11:30 p.m. on July 10 when they responded to allegations that he and his current girlfriend assaulted his ex-girlfriend in a parking lot. As police investigated the incident, they found a loaded .40 caliber handgun amid bushes nearby and spent hollow point rounds on the ground. The gun, bullet casings and Henderson’s car matched the weapon and vehicle used in the drive-by shooting.

Henderson admitted that he didn’t know the two men he tried to fight and had been the one who fired the gun, during his interview with Kirkland detectives.

After his arrest, Redmond police added charges, accusing Henderson of trafficking stolen property in May, according to court documents.
