The Bothell Police Department (BPD) investigated a suspicious package that was discovered just after 8 a.m. Tuesday in a garbage can in the south garage on the University of Washington Bothell campus.

Just before 10 a.m., bomb technicians made the suspicious device safe and removed it from the garage, allowing campus to go back to normal operations.

Bothell police said the device was a “military training munition.”

BPD Capt. Mike Johnson said they called in bomb technicians to look at the package after campus security examined the package and deemed it suspicious.

Johnson said the BPD is investigating the incident and how the device wound up on the UW Bothell campus, which it shares with Cascadia College.

“We’re going to be trying to do the best we can to determine who put it there,” he said. “We’re going to be pulling out all the stops to see who it was.”

According the UW Bothell Twitter page, both the Bellevue Police Department’s and the King County Sheriff’s Office’s bomb squads were called in to examine the package.

During the investigation, south access from State Route 522 was closed, but the school remained open. UW Bothell’s emergency website asked people to delay their travel to campus if possible and to avoid the south garage if they were already on campus and to use the north exit to leave campus.
