While the state tournament is still several months away, the goal seems pretty clear for the Cedar Park Christian boys basketball team — get through Cascade Conference play unscathed and roll the dice.
The Cascade Conference is among the toughest in Class 1A boys basketball, with four appearances in the state title game since 2009. Kings and Archbishop Murphy tend to make for harsh competition, meaning the Eagles can struggle in conference play and look like a state tournament contender in nonconference games.
The biggest weapon this season, though, is experience. Of the eight varsity players, five are seniors, and one of the returning juniors was among the team’s leading scorers last winter.
“I think if we can stay healthy, we have a chance to make a pretty good run,” said coach Adam Lynch, who is entering his ninth season. “We haven’t formalized goals in terms of talking about it, but I think it’s understood for every guy out there that they want to make the state tournament and go as deep as they can.”
Junior guard George Reidy averaged just over nine points per game in 2015-16, a year in which the Eagles went 11-14 and fell two games away from the state tournament.
Connor Renstrom and Jaden Sheffy combined for nearly 22 points per game last season, but both have moved on — Renstrom to graduation and Sheffy via transfer to Woodinville High.
Zach Fisk, who put up nearly eight points per night last year, is a senior this winter. Senior guard Drew McLaurin scored 6.5 points per game and led the team in assists.
Andrei Leonardi, Jack Stiger and Jack Flynn are all seniors. Hunter Morgan, a 6-foot-5 center, is a junior. Chase Witthuhn is a sophomore.
The Eagles tipped off the season on Tuesday at home with a win over University Prep. Cedar Park Christian is scheduled to play at Bellevue Christian at 8 p.m on Friday evening.
