Inglemoor teacher one of 23 selected for national award
The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) recently selected Inglemoor High math teacher James Smith as a winner of the Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished High School Mathematics Teaching. Smith is one of only 23 teachers selected from all of the high schools in the United States and Canada for the international recognition.
Nominations for this award were solicited from students in the 60 highest scoring American Mathematics Competitions. Inglemoor students Kerry Xing, Yota Kato and Yuta Kato were responsible for nominating Smith, whose rewards will include cash, a one-year membership with the MAA, 20 subscriptions to Math Horizons for distribution to students and a one-year membership in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
New roles for Dolores Reyes at Northshore Family Center
Northshore Family Center Program Manager Dolores Reyes will be leaving her position in order to dedicate more time with her family. She will return this fall to begin a new, part-time position within the Family Support department, where she will coordinate the Strengthening Multi-Ethnic Families and Communities series for parents and caregivers in English and Spanish at both the Northshore and Shoreline family centers.
Bothell hosts dads and daughters dance
The city of Bothell will host its eighth annual Dads and Daughters Spring Dance from 7-9:30 p.m. June 7 at the Northshore Senior Center (10201 E. Riverside Drive, Bothell). Girls in grades one through six are encouraged to attend with their dad or other adult male. Admission is $20 per couple and $8 per additional person if purchased in advance; $25 per couple and $10 per additional person at the door. Photo packages beginning at $12 will be available onsite.

Hot rods and hot dogs
Evergreen Washelli at Bothell Funeral Home and First Lutheran Church will host a car show and safety fair from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 21.
The free-of-charge event will feature cars, bikes and a community picnic with hot dogs. It will also include bike-helmet fitting and blood-pressure screening, as well as demonstrations by the Bothell Fire Department. Bike helmets will be available for $5. For information, contact (425) 486-1281.
Northshore students prepare to act on national stage
Local students Daniel Berryman, Marie Robello and Amy Allison Lamken, are three of 48 students from 18 states who have been cast in the first-ever high school production of “Hairspray,” which will premiere for thousands of students, teachers and theater professionals at the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Neb., June 24. The three students recently met with “Hairspray” composer and lyricist Marc Shaiman, who flew in to meet the cast and crew during their first rehearsal weekend.
Dennis Richter to battle Sen. McAuliffe for 1st District seat
Dennis Richter of Bothell has announced his intention to challenge fellow resident Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe for her seat as a representative of Washington’s 1st Legislative District.

City of Bothell seeks input on capital facilities plan
The Bothell City Council will take public testimony on a 2009-2015 Capital Facilities Plan at its June 17 meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. The meeting will be located at the Bothell’s Municipal Court Building (10116 N.E. 183rd St., Bothell).
The plan contains more than 40 projects that would take place over the next seven years, with total expenditures of approximately $250 million.
Residents can participate in the discussion of which projects to fund in the 2009-2015 plan, which includes facilities, parks, transportation and utility projects. The first two years of the plan will be incorporated in the 2009-2010 biennial budget.
