School is officially back in session for Northshore Schools. The city of Kenmore is reminding drivers to pay attention to the road, especially when children are present. There will be more vehicles on the road, more buses, and more people walking and biking to schools.
Just a reminder that in school zones nearing each of the Kenmore schools, speeds are restricted to 20 miles per hour when children are present. Drivers are to maintain 20 miles per hour speed throughout the entire school zone, until signs indicate the school zone has ended.
While dropping off children, do not double-park. This limits visibility of children walking around vehicles, and their visibility of other vehicles as well. To reduce traffic and save time, consider carpooling with other families in the neighborhood.
Keep an eye out for children, especially around the morning and afternoon bells. A reminder that all crossing roadways are crosswalks, even those not marked. Drivers should stop for all pedestrians in the roadway, no matter whose turn it may be.
Keep in mind to not block crosswalks while waiting in traffic and potentially putting children in the path of moving vehicles. If walking, remember to look left, right and left again before crossing the street and to continue to pay attention until you have crossed safely.
If a child is biking to school, give them at least three feet space while driving. Allow children plenty of time to make a turn and wait for them to pass before turning as they may be alarmed by your actions. Lastly, check mirrors before opening car doors.
Everyone can help set a good example and keep Kenmore’s school zones safe.
