Bothell defeats Inglemoor, 26-0
On a rainy Friday night, crosstown rivals Inglemoor High and Bothell High squared off in the annual Spaghetti Bowl.
The Inglemoor fans were fortunate enough to have home-field advantage at Pop Keeney Field and get the covered seating area on such a stormy night, while the Bothell fans toughed it out in the rain. This made for a wet-and-wild game, with No. 2 Bothell (7-0) receiving bragging rights for another year with a 26-0 victory.
Throughout the whole game, the rain pounded on the turf causing many fumbled snaps and turnovers. There were a total of nine fumbles and three turnovers.
“Obviously, the rain was an issue, however our game plan didn’t change because of the rain. We ran the ball and used the option and mixed in some passes,” said Viking senior quarterback Derek Wagner. Wagner had a rough night throwing and finished 1-for-9 passing with one interception and 32 yards rushing. Inglemoor (4-3) couldn’t get anything going offensively and finished the game with 145 yards of total offense.
Bothell’s game plan was, “To be physical and come out and attack,” stated Bothell senior quarterback Mitchell Muller.
Muller and the Cougars did just that with a steady dose of junior running back Luke Proulx. On the Cougars’ first drive, Proulx busted through the Viking defense for a 43-yard touchdown run, which was just a start for him. Proulx finished his night with three touchdowns and ran for 215 yards on 24 carries.
The Cougars’ offensive line had three fumbled snaps.
“It is wet and makes things a little different. The ball is heavy and wet, but that’s no excuse to not hold onto the ball,” Muller commented. Even with those conditions, Muller was 8-for-15 with 129 yards and found University of Washington-bound tight end Michael Hartvigson for a 4-yard touchdown pass.
The Cougar defense added another shutout to its season, and senior linebacker Jake Arzola had 7.5 tackles with a tackle for a loss. Senior linebackers Jeremy Owen and Clinton Hughes each brought down Wagner once behind the line as Bothell’s defense looked well prepared for the Vikings’ option run offense.
With the Spaghetti Bowl win, the Cougars clinched the 4A Kingco Crown title and will have a date with Skyline for the Kingco title in the coming weeks. This will be a marquee matchup between the No. 1- and No. 2-ranked teams in the state.
