Lockwood Elementary School Principal Ann Madsen has been named the East King Regional Distinguished Principal by the Elementary School Principals Association of Washington.

Madsen was recognized as one of 18 regional distinguished principals at the 2013 Washington Educators’ Conference, Oct. 21, in Seattle.

Madsen was nominated by her public school peers and selected for her work in setting high priorities for engaging with students. She begins the day greeting students as they arrive at school and during the day she frequently visits classrooms to listen as students share their learning. Madsen makes student interaction a priority and frequently talks with students at lunch and recess. She also engages with students and families at many social events.

Madsen believes that knowing the dynamics of instruction and recognizing and valuing the complexities of a student’s learning needs and strengths are critical to teaching and learning.

“I know how important it is for students and staff to see their principal as their advocate and someone who values them each as a learner,” states Madsen. “It is important to me to build experiences that build memories of school being about the importance of learning, being a contributing part of a community of learners while also having fun times during these crucial developmental childhood school days.”
