Cougars’ big finish leads to first win
The Bothell High Cougars had reason to worry as the Wildcats had them down, 10-0, early in the second quarter last Friday night at Mount Si High. But the Blue Train fought back and closed with a flourish, scoring twice in the fourth quarter en route to a 27-20 victory.
Bothell got on the board with a 6-yard touchdown run by running back Luke Proulx in the second quarter, and scored again on quarterback Braden Foley’s 22-yard screen pass to running back Nick Anthony.
The Wildcats answered with a scoring drive of their own to take a 20-13 lead into the fourth quarter.
Taven Shumaker ran in a 5-yarder, but the Cougars’ game-tying extra point was blocked, which left the score at 20-19.
With 7:30 remaining in the fourth quarter, Foley came up big for the Cougars with a 52-yard bomb to Trent Sewell that was right on the money, and a late interception of the Wildcats sealed the thrilling win.
The Cougars (1-1) next play in their home opener against Newport High at 7 p.m. tonight at Pop Keeney Stadium.
Fourth-quarter score dooms Inglemoor
The Inglemoor Vikings dropped a tight matchup, 21-17, to the 3A Juanita Rebels last Friday night at Juanita High.
The back-and-forth game was highlighted by a 42-yard pass from senior quarterback Mitchell Gunsolus to Todd Raynes, which put the Vikings up 17-14 at the half.
Neither team was able to complete a drive until the fourth quarter, when Rebel running back Jerimiah Laufasa — who scored four times during Juanita’s 41-7 win over Redmond in Week 1 — ran in a 2-yard score to put his team ahead for good.
The Vikings (1-1) have one more nonleague game at Lake Stevens at 7 p.m. tonight before picking up their league schedule against Ballard Sept. 23.
Cedar Parks routs Seaquam at tourney
Cedar Park Christian wrapped up its preseason play with a 44-3 victory over British Columbia’s Seaquam Secondary, the province’s 2A semi-finalist last year, during the 2010 CBA Classic at Seattle’s Memorial Stadium last Saturday.
Quarterback Justin Girgus led the offense on four straight touchdown drives, all ending in passes by the senior, including a 60-yard bomb to tight end Austin Donnel. Receiver Riley O’Regan caught five passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns, and Girgus finished the day with a mammoth 428 total yards, including 248 in the air and 180 on the ground on 18 carries.
Cedar Park (2-0) opens up league play in a tough 1A Nisqually league at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday at Charles Wright Academy.
