On a crisp clear night, Cedar Park Christian finished with its first win against Life Christian in six tries.
The defense stiffened up early and allowed only 19 yards of offense through 2½ quarters of play. The Eagles sacked Life Christian quarterback Joey Absten twice and forced four fumbles. Sophomore linebacker Dalton Combs led the defense with 13 tackles and two forced fumbles.
After the opening kickoff, Cedar Park drove down the field with four straight running plays, scoring in the first 55 seconds of action. After a defensive miscue, Cedar Park tightened down and forced a fumble or punt on each of the next three drives leading to a 32-0 advantage. After Life Christian’s only score of the game right before half, Cedar Park held strong and scored 22 unanswered points in the second half.
Some of the solid substitutions came off the bench in the third quarter and maintained solid play. Quarterback Daniel O’Regan completed a 52-yard pass to freshman halfback Steven Hunsaker and Ben Fuchs scored a touchdown on a 14-yard run play.
“Our defense played extremely well on the edges. They tried to get the inside cutback lanes on runs early, but our recovery to the ball was excellent,” said coach Craig Shetterly.
“We evened ourselves with this win. We’re gaining some momentum going into the final two weeks here. We still have our shots, but every game is a playoff game for us at this point. We’re playing for our football lives. That can make for a dangerous team.”
He added: “I’m really happy with the offense. We’ve broken school records this year, but we just keep adding to the numbers. I am very proud of how our players have taken tremendous pride in the type of offense we play.”
