Crayola will honor Holly Simonsen, a kindergartner from Cedar Wood Elementary in Bothell (Everett School District), at the opening night of the National Art Education Association (NAEA) National Convention at 7:15 p.m. March 17 at the Experience Music Project in Seattle.
Her artwork was one of 36 pieces across the country selected for Crayola’s Dream-Makers “Visual Voices: Speak Up for Creativity” online art gallery. Crayola’s annual art exhibition program asked students around the country to create a piece of artwork representing their interpretation of the theme “Speak up for Creativity.”
Following the NAEA opening-night event, Simonsen’s artwork will permanently go on display at the Department of Education offices in Olympia.
Eighteen of the 36 pieces will be on display at Thursday’s event.
In addition to creating a piece of artwork, Crayola asked students to submit a written statement representing their interpretation of the theme. Simonsen wrote: “Sometimes I get ideas from my family, looking around the house, playing with my siblings, or my cat.”
